I wondered what Milwaukee Road was going to do. 2006 carloads were up 10%. By years end, their fifty AC4400CW's were scattered so far over lines west that every train ran with something leased or unrebuilt as it rolled into Chicago.
Much of 2004's profits went to rebuilding the Miles City yard. This tightened Milwaukee's future in the Powder River. The road had to overlook motive power acquisitions for the sake of its future.

1.8 million TEU's moved through the Port of Seattle in 2005. While Milwaukee is clearly still the underdog, so much capacity finds a third Class 1 into the port now a necessity, not just a convenience. Almost ten Seattle to Chicago stack trains a day run each way on today's Milwaukee Road.
Coal was up. Intermodal was up. Merchandise was up. Milwaukee simply needed new engines. Borrowing horsepower hours one can't pay back and biting off short-term leases adds up fast in the railroad industry.
In April 2007, Milwaukee took delivery of its fifty GEVO's. It is clearly not enough power, but it will at least ease the pain. The coal trains now run with solid AC power. The SD60M's are back on the stack trains. Every now and then a leased SD40-2 mixes in here and there, but Milwaukee does okay except in grain season. I would say another fifty SD70ACe's or ES44's would get us up and rolling pretty good.
We almost lost lines west. Without low-sulfur coal, there would probably not be a Milwaukee Road today. I only see things improving. I feel we are in this for the long haul. Go Milwaukee Road, get us in another power crunch.
