MLB Mascot Races - The "Running Of" at Baseball Stadiums

Most all baseball teams have mascots, but a few teams have very special ones. The Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals have something that few teams in the major leagues have: mascot races. Though these are the three big racing teams, in recent years other teams have joined them: the Tampa Bay Rays have a Pepsi/Aquafina/Sierra Mist race, the Texas Rangers have a Dot Race, the Houston Astros have Hot Sauce Races, the Braves a Tool Race, and the Orioles, Indians and Royals all have hot dog races. The Cincinati Reds, who have three mascots, race each other each game.

In the early 90's, after the retirement of mascot Bernie, the Brewers were looking for something to keep fans excited. What they came up with was a race of various styles of sausage held before the bottom of the sixth inning of each home game. Sponsored by a local sausage company, a bratwurst (Brett Wurst), kielbasa (Stosh), Italian sausage (Guido), hot dog (Frankie Furter) and chorizo (Cinco) fly from third base around home towards first base on the warning track as the official Klement's Racing Sausages. Current standings put Brett Wurst in the lead with 18 wins.

The Pittsburgh Pierogis were introduced a few years later, in 1999. Jalapeno Hannah, Cheese Chester, Sauerkraut Saul and Oliver Onion run the same lines as the sausages, even traveling to Milwaukee for a five on four food competition when the Pirates play the Brewers.

The Pierogies also made a stop at National's Park in DC, where President Teddy chased the snacks with a fork and knife in hand. Teddy is one of the four national leaders that runs the race in Washington, all of whom are found on Mount Rushmore: Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt. The mascot racers wear period costumes and have caricature heads. Since the beginning of the races, Abe is far in the lead.
