Milwaukee schools will be conducting more thorough background checks on staff in the aftermath of a former teacher pleading guilty to four counts of sexual assault on a teenage student. That action is both reasonable and appropriate, in my view. In fact, Milwaukee administrators should be commended for dealing with the situation in this manner.
All Staff Working at Milwaukee Schools Need to be Thoroughly Screened
Milwaukee Tools
When it comes to the safety of students, we can't afford to wait until an incident happens before addressing the issue of student safety. Long gone are the days when parents could send their children to school and assume that they would be safe...especially from their teachers.
Adults with an interest in children for sexual purposes seek out their company. It's just the way it is. While Milwaukee schools are no more likely than schools in other jurisdictions to have a pedophile on staff, it would be naive to assume that it couldn't happen. Conducting a thorough background check on all people applying for jobs means that all applicants are treated equally, and no person is singled out for further investigation.
Background Checks for Milwaukee Schools Only Tell Part of the Story
Unfortunately, a background check on job applicants will only reveal whether that individual has ever been charged with a crime. In these types of incidents, there may be many victims over a number of years before anyone reports the inappropriate activity. Background checks are a good idea but they don't provide information about what a person may do in the future.
Everyone attending the Milwaukee schools needs to learn that they should be looking out for each other. Students who are the objects of unwanted attention from an adult, whether that person is on staff or not, need to know that they can come forward and report these incidents. These young people need to have confidence in the fact that they will be believed and that the matter will be investigated thoroughly.
People who have preyed on children in the past did so in the knowledge that their actions would be conducted in secret and that the victim was not likely to be believed. This is no longer the case, and by choosing to screen staff members more thoroughly, they are making their learning environment safer for everyone.
We may not be able to stamp out inappropriate behavior on the part of adults toward children, but it will be a lot more difficult for these incidents to happen at Milwaukee schools from now on. Growing up is difficult enough without having to deal with adults with an inappropriate agenda, and Milwaukee schools are definitely on the right track here.
