The origin of the term Bundt is found in the German word Bundkuchen, which is a ring shaped coffee cake. It appeared as early as in 1901 in the Settlement Cookbook written by Lizzie Kander of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Earlier the pans were made out of ceramic and cast iron but they used to prove very heavy and baking a cake used to be a tedious process. These were mainly used in Austria, Hungary and Germany to make ring-shaped cakes. But in 1950, H. David Dalquist developed a newer and more efficient version of the Bundt cake pans by introducing the use of aluminum in making them. He was the founder of Nordic Ware based in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and he developed the pans on the request of members of the Minneapolis Center of the Hadassah Society. He made some modifications in the existing Scandinavian Bundt pans and fashioned the pan out of aluminum.

Initially there was a slow response to the newly modified and developed aluminum cake pan. But in 1966, a Bundt cake entry won a second prize in a cake baking competition sponsored by Pillsbury. This led to a major increase in demand for the Bundt cake pans, surpassing even the tin Jell-O mold in terms of sale in the United States. Since the introduction of the product, the Nordic Ware company has sold more 50 million Bundt pans till date. Dalquist trademarked the word Bundt and Pillsbury licensed the name in 1970 for a line of cake mixes.

Available in various sizes and shapes, these pans can be used for cakes, muffins, cupcakes, shortcake baskets, gelled desserts or salads, and even meatloaf. There are a lot of choices when it comes to the shape and size of the cake. The Bundt cake vessels can be found in all sorts of shapes right from the regular one to the more exotic ones. The shapes vary according to the choice, season and occasion. There is flowered shaped cake pans like the Sunflower Bundt, and Wildflower Cake Pan, a big rectangle-shaped cake crowned with wildflowers, the Chrysanthemum Bundt pan, the Daisy shaped Pan and the Bouquet Bundt Pan that produces six small cakes in portion sizes. There are also cake pans for special occasions like the heart shaped Bundt cake pan fro Valentines Day celebration and Sweetheart Rose Muffin or Rose Bundt Pan on Mother's Day.

Along with these baking pans, there are a variety of cake mixes, both regular and gourmet which are available in the market. Nordic Ware, which is the pioneer for the development of Bundt cake pans, has also developed some gourmet cake mixes which are in great demand in the market. It makes for easier and hassle free baking.

One of the most popular Bundt bake ware is a Classic Bundt Pan 12 cup from Nordic Ware. It is really a wonderful piece of cook ware which has a Teflon non-stick coating. Apart from Nordic Ware, there are some other companies which have also started manufacturing Bundt Cake Pans. Simax Glassware, Calphalon Bake Ware and Berndes are some of the prominent players in this field.
